Head gaskets

If you replace the heads and head gaskets, make sure you re torque the heads after the initial start up of the motor. After you do the synchronizing of the carbs, and reset all the idle settings, which usually takes a bit of running time, let the motor cool a while and re set the torque on the head bolts. You will be surprised at how much more it will turn to achieve the correct torque settings again. After a few days, redo it again, it will be the last time you should have to do it! 3rd time is the charming number in my findings. Reset the valve lash each time you re torque the heads also! You could end up with seeping gaskets if this is not done ritually! Trust me, but don't ask how I know this!

I totally agree.I didn't check my Head bolts one time after an engine build and it cost me a Head gasket!!

Excellent advice, I usually do a re-torque after the first test run and again after some miles to bed in. well worth the time!

I check them again around the 500 mile mark and re-adjust the tappets and cam-chain just for good measure.Always on a cold engine of course.

I was surprised how much mine moved on each re-set too. The outer ones seemed to be the worst for some reason.
When I first got the bike, the left side head was off and when it came to replacing it I carefully cleaned everything up, dried out the bolt holes and cleaned the bolts. I always let a head 'settle' for half an hour or so after final torque setting is reached then re-check all the bolts again. The top front bolt kept turning a little bit each time and must have gone through almost a complete turn before it was right. The thread had a sticky feel to it, yet when I did both head gaskets a couple of months ago, it was just fine like the rest of them.

With luck it was just a dirty thread on a bolt or on the threads inside the Cylinder head.It's one of those thing not to worry about if you don't have to do any top-end work for a long time.If you need to de-coke down the line you can use the,"Poor Man's" effective liquid de coke.Save you used brake fluid.Pour an egg-cup full in one cylinder.Spin the engine with the Kill switch on a couple of times.Leave overnight and then run the engine on the morrow.Then repeat the next night/morning with the other cylinder
