GL500 engine 'clacking' noise?? Help please

Postby Davejc » Tue Aug 18, 2015 8:11 pm

Hi all, I'm new to this forum but as I just have purchase a well used gl500 i suspect I will become a regular!
So far I've changed the for seals which has made a big difference to handling but the main bug bear at the minute is a loud 'clacking sound from the engine. I've adjusted the valves which helped it tick over a little smoother but it's still noisy.
I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the Tacho? The Tacho clock doesn't work so I took out the cable which seemed fine but the little stub doesn't turn when the engine is on. At idle and low revs it's loud but when I ride it and put it under load it quieten significantly until the revs drop again. But it's always noticeable when riding.

Any ideas people or anyone had similar problems?
Thanks
Dave

This forum doesn't get that busy these days but I keep it live as a reference. It's possible there's a fault with the Tach-drive but you will get more answers on this forum,

It's usually best to make a recording of the noise and post a link to it.That can help people diagnose the sound :)
